Azimio leader Raila Odinga has said that the government should surrender its 20 percent shareholding of Mumias Sugar Company to the county government.

Speaking during the burial of the mother to Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa on Monday, October 31, in Mumias, Raila said that the move will ease operations of the company.

The former Prime Minister further claimed that if the government surrendered the shareholding, it will enable locals to start growing sugarcane.

Morever, the ODM leader used the same podium to claim that tax regimes by the government cannot be imposed without the participation of the people.

Raila said that the regimes can only be imposed through Parliament.

"Tax regimes can not be imposed without the participation of the people through their representatives in Parliament,” he said.

His remarks come after President William Ruto said that the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) will continuously engage with stakeholders to review tax policy and make it conducive to traders and MSMEs.

The Head of State said that KRA must reflect equity by shifting from the over-taxing of trade and under-taxing of wealth.
