Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said it was wrong for KRA to shut the companies yet they were servicing them with billions of shillings in terms of taxes.

President William Ruto's regime has seen a number of companies shut during former President Uhuru Kenyatta's tenure opened. 

The companies were closed for various reasons including non-payment of tax. 

Among the companies shut that have since been opened is Africa Spirits which is owned by a Billionaire businessman Humphrey Kariuki.

The factory was closed down over Sh41 billion tax evasion allegations. The KRA faulted the company for using fake KRA stamps in its products.

Another company to be closed down by KRA is Mt Kenya Breweries limited. It was shut down by KRA over failure to file returns and the use of fake stamps.

KRA raided the premises on April 9 and 10, 2021.

The third company to be elbowed out of operations is Rift Valley brewing company. The KRA raided the Naivasha-based brewer in 2020 over the use of illegal stickers. 20 workers were arrested during the raid.

Other companies that have breathed fresh life are Wananchi breweries limited, Vinepack limited, Big five breweries limited, Elle Kenya limited, Lumat company limited and Tona Brewing limited.

"The issue of closing factories for taxpayers who are suffering is a thing of the past because it is foolish. The issue of tax notices and agency notices where you close accounts if you shut down an account for six months (and) somebody cannot do business, where will you collect tax the following year?" he posed
