"The President cannot lawfully appoint the accounting officer for the National Police in such a manner."

The President of the law society of Kenya Eric Theuri has threatened legal court action against President William Ruto's move to appoint an accounting officer for the National Police Service.

In his additional appointment on Wednesday, Ruto appointed Beatrice Sialaal Lemedeket as the National Police Service Principal Administrative Secretary/Accounting Officer.

Theuri seemed to suggest that the appointment is a contravention of the law adding that the move will be challenged in court.

"The President cannot lawfully appoint the accounting officer for the National Police in such a manner. Especially not after his pronouncements after assuming office. This appointment will be challenged in Court," he said.

The appointment of Lemedeket is part of Ruto's plan to give the National Police Service financial independence.

"Financial independence to the police will give impetus to the fight against corruption, and end the political weaponization of the criminal justice system; an undertaking I made to the people of Kenya," Ruto said in his inaugural address at Kasarani stadium on September 13.

Sialaal has been working at the Kenya Pipeline Company Corporation Foundation as Corporate Social Responsibility Manager.

She has over 12 years of experience in the development field with vast experience in community networking, partnership development, project conceptualization and resource mobilization in development.

Sialaal will be required to keep the Interior Ministry Cabinet Secretary updated on all financial matters of the Ministry and provide information and reports as may be directed by the Cabinet Secretary.
