Kiambu Governor Kimani Wmaatangi has issued a statement after a building he evacuated at least 100 people caved in on Monday morning. 

The governor led a 45-minute emergency rescue on Sunday that saw people living in the 5-storey building leave.

On Monday morning, the fears expressed by the county government happened as the Ruiru building collapsed.

In a statement about the building, the governor said everyone is safe and that no one had been injured.

"Yesterday after invoking a 45-minute emergency evacuation and a 20-meter barricade of a building in Ruiru Town, Ruiru sub-county," he said.

"It finally caved in, everyone is safe, forensic investigations are ongoing and a comprehensive report of conditions of the adjacent building will be communicated."

The collapse of the building has won the county government's praise for taking swift action in responding to the situation.

The building had developed cracks sending a warning that it could fall anytime.

Kiambu county has been marred with cases of building collapsing.

Barely a week ago, a building under construction went down falling on a mabati structure where a couple was sleeping. They all died.
