The suspect confessed to being in town the day the fatal shooting occurred.

A man believed to have shot dead the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) staffer Lilian Gathenya Waithera also known as Mary was on Monday arrested in Murang'a County.

Police traced him to Kenol in the country where he is believed to have spent time in the past week.

The suspect is said to be a licensed firearm holder and a businessman in the county.

Reports say the man has a female friend at Jubilee Insurance Building which is opposite the site where Gathenya was killed.

The suspect confessed to being in town the day the fatal shooting occurred.

“He says he never went up to any of the floors at the building. He claims he placed the weapon in his car before leaving,” said a senior officer in the probe said.

The suspect has however denied any involvement in the killing.

It is believed Waithera was shot at an elevated point along Kaunda street, in Nairobi's Central Business District.

Police and pedestrians at first thought 46-year-old Waithera collapsed and died out of natural causes.

It is an autopsy done on the body that led to the discovery of a bullet lodged in her lungs.

Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei said the bullet was handed to ballistic experts for analysis.

He confirmed the suspect had been arrested as part of the probe into the incident.

“We suspect it was a bullet that discharged and came back hitting her but let us hear what experts say,” he told the press.
