Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has claimed that Azimio la Umoja politicians were saved by the Media during the anti-government protests on Monday march 20.

In an update via Twitter on Tuesday, March 21, Sifuna claimed that anti-riot police officers were intending to harm Azimio politicians and protestors but feared the presence of the media.

“Leo I salute the Kenyan Media. Your presence and your cameras saved lives yesterday. The Police were intent on harming peaceful protesters. They shot at unarmed civilians with their weapons and canons. You kept all of us safe by shooting back with your Lenses. You are all heroes,” said Sifuna.

During the Monday protests, Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga was blocked from accessing the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) forcing him to reroute to Kamukunji, Eastleigh and Mathare where he addressed his supporters.

The former Prime Minister announced that he would hold protests against the Kenya Kwanza government every Monday until their demands are met.

“Tulisema leo ni siku ya likizo lakini mambo bado. Tumeanza vita na kila jumatatu kutakua na maandamano na haitaisha hadi wakenya wapate haki yao,” said Raila.

National Assembly Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi, Senate Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo and Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi were arrested during the demos but were later released.
