Residents descended on one of the officers with kicks and blow, killing him on the spot

A police officer is among the three people who died on Tuesday in a dramatic incident that was occasioned by the attempted arrest of a suspected drug dealer in the Kijitoni area of Lamu County.

It all started when the police stopped a suspected drug dealer identified as Miji Aboud Mohammed.

Upon searching his car, he was found in possession of a substance believed to be heroin that was stashed in a piece of paper. 

When police moved to recover the paper from him, Mohammed is said to have swallowed it.

The officers then made efforts to choke him in a bid to force him to vomit the substance.

In the process, the suspect is said to have died as police attempted to retrieve the substance from him.

A section of area residents who witnessed the incident allegedly attacked the officers upon seeing the suspect had lost his life. 

They descended on one of the officers with kicks and blows, killing him on the spot. His three other colleagues who were injured in the process were rushed to the hospital. 

The drama went on as the member of the public followed the injured cops to King Fahad Kisiwani Hospital in an attempt to take the law into their hands. 

Police were forced to fire in the air to disperse them.

A patient who had been admitted to the hospital reportedly died from shock as a result of the gunshots, police said.
