Mukami passed away on Thursday night, according to her daughter, Evelyn Kimathi Wangui.


Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced that the funeral arrangements of Dedan Kimathi's widow Mama Mukami Kimathi will be overseen by the State.

Mukami passed away on Thursday night, according to her daughter, Evelyn Kimathi Wangui.

Her death was confirmed upon arrival at Nairobi Hospital where he was rushed for assessment.

Gachagua said a senior government official will be appointed to coordinate the burial arrangements which he hinted will be fully footed by the State.

Speaking at Lee Funeral Home where he had gone to condole with the family following her death, Rigathi said the government will work closely with the family until the deceased is laid to rest,

"The senior official will work with the family to give Mukami a befitting send-off," he said.

He at the same time mourned the deceased describing him as an inspiration to many Kenyans for the role he played in Kenya's independence struggle.

"As a nation, we are very saddened by her death. She was a beacon of hope not just in Central Kenya but the whole country," he said.

Mukami was accompanied by Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria and Naivasha MP Jane Kihara.

Mukami was among the Mau Mau freedom fighters detained at the Kamiti Maximum Prison during the struggle for independence.

She was instrumental in the push that helped Kenya regain its independence from the colonialists.
