A national committee set by President William Ruto is overseeing the burial plans.

The national government will preside over the burial of Mukami Kimathi, widow of the late Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi.

Mukami breathed her last on the evening of Thursday, May 4, while aged 101 years.

Speaking after meeting with the bereaved family, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Saturday, May 13, has been set as the burial date.

A national funeral committee stewarded by Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo is in conjunction with the Nyandarua county government planning the funeral.

"In consultation with the family, we have agreed that the funeral service will be held on Saturday, 13th May, 2023, at her home in Njabini, Nyandarua County, and H.E President Ruto will lead the government in giving the late hero a befitting send-off," said the the deputy president.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua met with with the family of the late Mukami Kimathi on Friday.

Gachagua said all the surviving freedom fighters would be accorded special recognition during the send off.

The deceased's daughter Evelyn Kimathi confirmed that she was taken to Nairobi Hospital where the death was confirmed.

The body currently lying at Lee Funeral Home as the nation wakes up.  

Mama Mukami has been in and out of Nairobi Hospital where she has been receiving treatment most of the time. 

Her sickness has often been reportedly linked to her old age.

During her last visit to the hospital, Mukami received financial aid from President William Ruto's administration, which helped her clear Sh1.3 million hospital bill.
