Francis Atwoli said his honesty while defending workers' interests would prolong his stay at COTU.

The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) has defended its boss against calls for his retirement.

To pose the question for Francis Atwoli's exit from the secretary general post was Narok senator Ledama Olekina.

The legislator observed that Atwoli had been at the helm of the organisation for too long with his term limit not being definite.

Ledama found it strange that the trade unionist had served through all three presidential terms starting from the late Daniel Moi's tenure.

"When is Atwoli retiring? This man has been around the labor movement for decades! Moi come and left, Kibaki and uhuru followed and the way things are unfolding the current occupier of the house on the hill will also go and leave him there ….I wonder what his secret is?" posed Ledama.

Francis Atwoli has headed COTU since 2001.

However, defending its boss, COTU said his service to workers overrides his supposed tenure limit.

"The secret is hidden in plain sight. Dr. Atwoli is elected to serve Kenyan workers and he wholeheartedly serves Kenyan workers with all his strength.

Understandably, in executing his work, Dr. Atwoli has served you and even supported you to win the Narok Senate seat," said the organisation.

On his part, Atwoli suggested virtues like honesty would make him hold the secretary general post for long.

"Secret is that Good service to man is service to God and he who serves God you cannot defeat him I will be there for sometimes because of honesty ! God Bless," he said.

Atwoli has been at the helm of COTU for over two decades.
