"All I remember is I tried to reach for the breaks to slow down the speeding truck but they failed."

The truck driver who was involved in the Londiani tragedy that killed 52 people has opened up on what happened leading to the tragedy.

Gilbert Ntuyemungu, who had been unconscious since the accident happened, told the media from his hospital bed that he has been using the Nakuru - Kericho route since 1997.

At the time of the accident, Ntuyemungu was on his way to Busia.

According to the driver, the vehicle became difficult for him to control owing to the weight of the goods he was carrying.

"What I can remember is I tried to reach for the breaks to slow down but it was not possible because the truck was on a high speed. The brakes failed," he said.

"Before passing out, I heard loud screams. I was removed from the scene while not aware of myself."

Ntuyemungu is still recuperating at the Nakuru referral hospital where he says he is feeling pain in his neck, back and chest.

The accident has so far claimed the lives of 52 people.

Kericho Governor Erick Mutai on Saturday said among the 52, 32 are males, 18 females, and 2 children.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is this Tuesday set to lead fundraising to help victims of the accident.

The fundraising events will be held at Londiani grounds.
