"It has been decided that all day Primary and Secondary schools within Nairobi and Mombasa Counties shall remain closed tomorrow.”

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has directed all-day Primary and secondary schools within Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa Counties to be closed on Wednesday, July 19, 2023.

Kindiki in a statement on Tuesday, July 18 evening stated that the government received an intelligence report that there could be violence during the Azimio protests on Wednesday which could put students in danger.

“The Government has received credible security intelligence that criminal elements planning to unleash terror and violence on the public tomorrow intend to engage in armed skirmishes with security agencies around certain schools within Nairobi and Mombasa Counties,” said Kindiki.

He added, “As a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of school children, it has been decided that all day Primary and Secondary schools within Nairobi and Mombasa Counties shall remain closed tomorrow.”

The Interior CS said the Ministry of Education will announce on Wednesday the resumption of learning in the schools after assessing the security situation.

“The Ministry of Education shall announce the resumption of learning in the aforesaid schools upon assessment of the security situation in the course of tomorrow,” Kindiki stated.

This comes hours after Kindiki asked Kenyans to go about their daily business normally on Wednesday despite the planned Azimio anti-government demonstrations.

“Members of the public are advised to go about their daily businesses normally as law enforcement agencies ensure their safety and security. Those who wish to express their political rights should do so within the law and without violating the rights of others,” Kindiki stated.
