“We demand for the immediate release of those detained noting that their detention is not only malicious but also unlawful."

Narc Kenya Party Leader Martha Karua has condemned the arrest of Azimio la Umoja leaders and close associates by the police.

In a statement on Wednesday, July 19, Karua stated that the whereabouts of Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino are unknown since his arrest on Tuesday night.

“We condemn in the strongest terms possible the arrests and or abductions of Azimio leaders and close associates of leaders without any colour of right or the slightest justification.

“Last night Hon. Babu Owino MP Embakasi East was arrested by police and is being held incommunicado. His whereabouts remain unknown. Today hon Ken Chonga MP Kilifi South and Hon. Teddy Mwambire, Speaker Kilifi County have been arrested and detained in an unknown place,” read the statement in part.

Karua also stated the police have arrested Nairobi MCAs; Wilfred Odallo (Mabatini), Redson Onyango (Ngei) and Nairobi County Budget Officers Erick Otieno and Anthony Otsula.

The police also arrested Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s bodyguard Maurice Ogeta and spokesperson Dennis Onyango.

Karua termed the arrests illegal saying the Kenya Kwanza government is desperate to paralyze the Azimio coalition and its top leaders.

She demanded the release of the Azimio leaders and associates or they be taken to court and charged if they committed any offense.

“We demand for the immediate release of those detained noting that their detention is not only malicious but also unlawful. If it were not so, they would have been taken before the nearest courts and charged immediately,” she stated.

Karua further stated that the opposition coalition has instructed its lawyers to take legal action against police officers who are conducting themselves unlawfully in the anti-government protests.
