Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru said he was able to speak to MP Babu Owino at the Wanguru Police Station.


Drama unfolded at Wang'uru Police Station in Mwea in Kirinyaga County after relatives, friends and some supporters of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino stormed the station to demand his release.

Among those who pitched a tent at the police station is Babu Owino's wife Fridah Ongili.

The group were heard shouting for his release asking the security agencies to arraign the MP if he had committed an offence.

"Tunataka Babu...Babu Owino has not killed anyone. Take him to court if he has done anything wrong," one of those who stormed the police station was heard saying.

At Wanguru police station, however, police were deployed in large numbers to contain any protests that can be staged there.

The officers at some point ejected family members and friends of the MP at the station after pressure mounted.

Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru said he was able to speak to MP Babu Owino at the station. He said police were cooperative and that there were plans to take him to court. 

Babu who was arrested on Tuesday around 8pm is yet to be presented in court more than 24 hours later.

The constitution stipulates that one is required to be presented in court within 24 hours after arrest.

Reports accessed by Nairobi Leo indicate that former MP Maina Njenga is also held at the station hours after being arrested from his Kiserian home in Ngong, Kajiado county.

There are plans to present the two to court.
