Police have gunned down a key suspect in the murder of DCI officer David Mayaka in a dramatic shootout in Kayole, Nairobi.

John Kamau, alias Faruk, was gunned down in Soweto Area on Tuesday morning during which police recovered 12 rounds of ammunition and a Ceska pistol.

A source privy to the dramatic shooting says the suspect shot at one of the officers injuring him. This led to the other officers opening fire and killing him on the spot.

The operation was mounted by sleuths from the elite Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau based at the DCI Nairobi regional command.

The raid which reportedly happened on Tuesday 4am sought to arrest the suspect but he is said to have resisted arrest by firing at the officers.

Police had been trailing Faruk for the past weeks after he and two others shot and killed Mayaka in an ambush as he changed the tyre of his car on August 8.

Mayaka was in the company of his wife at the time he was shot dead.

His other accomplice Alex Wanjiru, 23, was arrested on August 15 while hiding in his grandmother’s house in Kikuyu, Kiambu.

The suspects were aboard a motorbike when they accosted Mayaka and shot him dead.

They then disappeared leading to a police operation to weed them out of their hideouts.
