A High Court sitting in Nairobi has suspended the deregistration of Pastor Ezekiel Odero's New Life Prayer Centre and Church.

The registrar of societies in a Gazette Notice on Friday deregistered Pastor Ezekiel's Church dealing a blow to the Church's activities.

Pastor Ezekiel, however, managed to pull his first win in the case after the court temporarily suspended the suspension.

Justice Jairus Ngaah granted the stay application sought by Pastor Ezekiel in a case he filed on Monday.

Justice Jairus Ngaah.

"Upon perusal of material placed before the court in support of the application," Justice Nyagah said.

"I am persuaded to exercise my discretion and allow the applicants to challenge the gazette notice dated August 18, 2023, whose purport is to deregister the society referred to as New Life Prayer Center and Church."

In his court papers, Odero claimed he was not given any opportunity to defend himself before the registrar of the societies began the process of deregistering his church.

He pleaded to have the decision overturned saying it is denying his congregants the freedom of worship.

He maintained he had no prior information as to the decision of the Registrar to cancel the Registration of the church.
