The former Managing Director Alex Gitari and former General manager for project and Engineering services Fred Odawo were sacked over Friday's blackout at JKIA.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has sacked Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director Alex Gitari.

The sack came hours after Jomo Kenyatta International Airport was thrown into a blackout after power outages were witnessed in various parts of the country.

The CS who addressed a press conference on Saturday announced that Henry Ogoye will take of KAA in acting capacity with immediate effect.

Ogoye was serving as the Head of Corporate Planning at the authority until his appointment to the new role.

Kenya Airports Authority's General Manager Project and Engineering Services Fred Odawo has also been sacked.

Eng. Samuel Mwochache will replace Fred Odawo in acting Capacity,

“I wish to issue an unreserved apology to all travellers and airport users who were affected in one way or the other by the power disruption at JKIA,” Murkomen said.

Murkomen said the outage affected Terminal 1A which he described as the biggest and “the jewel” of the Airport.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the incident though regrettable did not pose any danger to our incoming and outgoing flights and passengers

The CS said efforts have been put n place to ensure the incident does not happen again.

“In order to ensure that a similar incident is not replicated, it has been decided that the two generators that were procured more than two years ago be immediately commissioned,” said Mr Murkomen.

“I assure the country and the world that we have taken measures to enhance capacity of technical experts in the engineering department to ensure this incident does not recur.”
