Babu Owino has made a request to President Ruto on University Funding.

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has advised President William Ruto to revert to the old university funding model.
Speaking on Thursday, August 31, Babu noted that the new funding model will deny the majority of students the chance to get a university education.

The ODM MP pointed out that it is the role of the government to fund university students adding that the opposition will not allow the current administration to destroy university education.

“I advise the president to go to the old way of application where every student who was called by government in any university was funded by the government.

“It is the role of the government to fund students because there is a day you promised that university education will be free. Right now education is not free so you are literary killing the education system in this nation and we are not giving you this opportunity just to run over us because we are closer to the future than you,” Owino stated.

President Ruto launched the new university funding model on May 3 announcing that the funding will be through government scholarships, loans, and bursaries.

According to the model, students from needy households joining universities will receive government scholarships of up to a maximum of 53 percent and loans of up to 40 percent. Their Households will only pay for 7 percent of the cost of their University Education.

Less needy students joining university will be funded through a Government scholarship of up to a maximum of 38 percent of the cost of the programme and 55 percent in the form of loans.
Students who require funding must make a formal application through the Higher Education Financing portal.
