The former deputy governor passed away on Saturday, September 9. 

Former Migori Deputy Governor Nelson Mahanga Mwita has passed.

According to reports, Mahanga died on Saturday, September 9 while receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi.

Migori Governor Ochillo Ayacko in a statement on Saturday evening mourned the death of Mahanga and sent condolences to his family and relatives.

“With a heavy heart, I send my sincere condolences to family, friends, relatives, and the entire citizenry of Migori County and Kenya at large for the unfortunate demise of our first Deputy Governor Hon. Nelson Mahanga Mwita. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. My deepest empathy,” Governor Ayacko stated.

The Migori County Government in a separate statement eulogized Mahanga as a devoted leader in public service who gave his best for the betterment of the society.

“The late Hon.Nelson Mahanga Mwita, the immediate former Migori county government Deputy Governor was a devoted leader in public service who gave his best for the betterment of the society. With great commiseration, we register our sincere condolences to the family, friends and the people of Migori for having lost such a useful leader. May His Soul rest in eternal peace,” the statement read.

Mahanga served as the first Migori Deputy Governor working under former governor Okoth Obado. The two served for two terms and left office in 2022.

 The late former deputy governor in 2020 took charge of some functions in Migori County after Obado was blocked by the High Court from accessing his office over graft charges.
