The government has announced plans to close all privately owned children’s homes and orphanages.

The Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection, Florence Bore, has announced plans to close all private children's homes and orphanages.

In a statement on Sunday, October 1, Bore said the move was part of the government's deinstitutionalisation programme to ensure a safe place for children.

She noted that the government will seek suitable homes to house the children from the private homes.

“Deinstitutionalisation of Children is the process of reforming child care systems and closing down of orphanages and children's homes and in place finding suitable homely placements for vulnerable children and support them in non-institutional ways,” Bore stated.

The Labour and Social Protection CS went on to say that the programme is being hailed around the world for its proven success.

“World over, this process is being hailed as Children are able to thrive best when raised in at best in a home. These Temporary places of Safety ensure a safe space for rehabilitation as the process of reintegration continues,” said Bore

CS Bore also revealed that the Government will implement the changes over an eight-year period.

“In the next eight years, those private homes will not exist. We need to prepare in order to absorb those children that will come from private homes,” The Labour CS added.
