“This brutality will not go unchallenged. This brutality will have to be answered for and accounted for. If the government does not act, we will help the people to act."

Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga now wants the government to halt demolitions in Athi River, Machakos County.

Speaking on Tuesday, October 17, Raila said people have suffered huge losses following the demolitions which began on Friday last week.

He demanded the government shares plans for compensating the victims whose property has been lost and how they will be settled.

“The Kenya Kwanza administration must immediately halt any further demolitions. It must share with the victims and the country the immediate plans to pay compensation for property that has been unlawfully destroyed and to find alternative settlement for the victims,” said Raila.

The ODM leader also demanded that individuals behind the fraudulent selling of the East African Portland Cement land be investigated.

“One thing that is being used against opposition to the demolitions is that East African Portland Cement owns the land and the titles were fraudulent. We therefore demand investigation and accountability of everyone, private and public, involved in this,” he stated.

The opposition chief noted that the Azimio coalition will help the victims to act if the government fails to adhere to the demands.

“This brutality will not go unchallenged. This brutality will have to be answered for and accounted for. If the government does not act, we will help the people to act,” Raila added.

His demands come after the police blocked him from accessing the site where demolitions are occurring.

Raila who was in the company of Kalonzo Musyoka, Governor Wavinya Ndeti, Senator Edwin Sifuna and MP Patrick Makau was told his visit would interfere with the ongoing exercise.
