“There currently exists no bar against the decision made by the minority party to replace its deputy whip."

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has approved Azimio la Umoja’s decision to replace Nominated MP Sabina Chege as the Deputy Minority Whip.

Speaking in the House on Wednesday, October 25, Wetang’ula said there is nothing barring the decision by the minority side to replace Chege with Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje.

“There currently exists no bar against the decision made by the minority party to replace its deputy whip. Standing Order 20 A5 requires the speaker to convey a decision to replace a whip to the house, in this regard the Honorable Mark Mwenje the MP forthwith replaces Sabina Chege MP as deputy whip of the Minority party,” said Wetang’ula.

The National Assembly Speaker at the same time recognized Jubilee as a Parliamentary party noting that the recognition does not affect the status given to the Majority and Minority parties.

“The Jubilee party is hereby recognized as a parliamentary party within Standing Order 20 A this recognition does not in any way elevate it to affect the status given to Majority and Minority parties,” he added.

The Azimio coalition resolved to remove Sabina Chege from the Deputy Minority Whip position on May 30 over her allegiance to President William Ruto.

The nominated MP however moved to court to block the removal citing dissatisfaction. The court however dismissed Chege’s appeal challenging the Azimio coalition’s decision and directed her to launch a complaint in a proper forum.
