The stampede on Mashujaa Day killed four people.

President William Ruto has made good his promise to honour a Kericho native hailed for being first Kenyan Olympic medallist.

Kiprugut Chumo was honoured by having the Kericho Green Stadium renamed after him.

The event was presided over by Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba. With the foregoing, the stadium will be called Kiprugut Chumo Stadium.

Besides such honours, Ababu restated the government's commitment to elevate the statuses of personalities who shined in their respective sports disciplines.

"It is official: we have renamed Kericho Green Stadium to Kiprugut Chumo Stadium in honour of Kenya's first ever Olympics medalist. We are determined to elevate status of all our sporting greats, and to improve their welfare through unprecedented interventions like the affordable housing and pension scheme for athletes," said Namwamba.

This came a month after people died in a stampede at the venue. At least four women were confirmed dead.

This was during the Mashujaa Day celebrations presided over by Ruto.

The stampede occurred after thousands of people stormed the stadium early morning to gain access.

A report filed at Kericho Police Station, seen by Nairobi Leo, indicated that the tragedy came about after a tea vendor spilt her wares causing tension.

Those around resorted to running leading to the stampede.
