The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has revealed that the traffic snarl experienced along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway has been occasioned by the increased travel for festivities.

In a statement on Friday, December 22, KeNHA said Police officers have been deployed on the highway to guide traffic and manage the situation.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) alerts motorists plying or planning to use the Nairobi - Nakuru Highway of a traffic snarl-up from Rironi occasioned by increased travel for festivities. Traffic police are actively managing the situation,” read the statement in part.

The authority advised motorists to maintain lane discipline and refrain from overlapping to prevent additional congestion on the highway.

At the same time, KeNHA urged motorists to use alternative routes due to the congestion on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

"Motorists are advised to maintain lane discipline and refrain from overlapping to prevent additional congestion. They can also use alternative routes,” KeNHA stated.

The statement comes after travelers heading for the Christmas festivities were left stranded on the highway for hours.

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale was among those affected by the snarl-up on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

“Dead stuck in a kilometers long traffic jam as we snake our way to Kakamega. It's consoling that a dual carriageway of the Nairobi-l to Mau Summit junction is in our development blueprint. We will transform Kenya,” Khalwale stated.
