The new NYS Director General will serve in the position for a period of three years.

President William Ruto has appointed James Kipsiele Tembur as the new National Youth Service (NYS) Director General.

According to a gazette notice dated December 19, Tembur will serve in the position for a period of three years.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 16 (1) of the National Youth Service Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint- James Kipsiele Tembur to be the Director-General of the National Youth Service, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 20th December, 2023,” the notice read.

Kipsiele was among the five candidates shortlisted for the NYS top position.

Others were; Njiri Nelson Mugweru, Anjere Alfred Tom, Nakitari Humphrey Okuku, and Mbaruku Moses Njeru.

The position was previously held by Matilda Sakwa whose stint ended in April this year.

Sakwa who headed NYS since September 2019 handed over to Tembur who has been serving as the NYS DG in acting capacity.

Following her exit, Sakwa was appointed as the CEO of the Pyrethrum Processing Company of Kenya.

"To support in steering this transformative programme, it is notified that Ms. Matilda Sakwa has been redeployed to the Ministry of Agriculture & Livestock Development and appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the Pyrethrum Processing Company of Kenya Limited (PPCL). The appointment takes effect immediately," Head of Public Service Felix Koskei said in a statement.
