Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has issued a breakdown of the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) results. 

According to the data from the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), 899,453 candidates sat the 2023 KCSE examination, 450,554 were male, while 448,899 were female, representing 50.09 per cent and 49.9 per cent.

Machogu indicated that 1,216 candidates, representing 0.14 per cent, got straight As in 2023 compared to 1,146 in 2022. Out of the 1,216, only 391 were female while the number of male candidates with As was 825.

A total of 7,254 got A- (minus), 18,078 attained B+ (plus), 36,728 got B (plain) and 78,343 got C+ (plus).

92,612 got C (plain), 107,471 C- (minus), 125,006 D+ (plus), 155,276 D (plain), 165,861 D- (minus) and 48,174 candidates got E.

"I direct the Directorate of Quality Assurance to work with other field officers and teachers to investigate these E Grade cases in each county of the country and submit a report to me within one month for further action," he added.

The number of candidates who attained the minimum university entry qualification (Grade C+ and above) was 201,133 (22.27%) in the year 2023 KCSE Examination compared to 173,345 (19.62%) in the year 2022.

Out of the 30 subjects offered in 2023, twelve (12) subjects recorded a significant performance improvement - Mathematics, Kiswahili, Biology, Biology for the Blind, CRE, Business Studies, German, Music, Chemistry, Building Construction, French and Electricity.

The number of candidates aged 16 years and below increased from 12,710 (1.438%) in the year 2022 to 16,040 (1.776%) in the year 2023. 

The highest percentage of candidates registered for the 2023 KCSE Examination were within the appropriate age bracket of between 17 to 19 years.

"The results of the remaining 4,109 candidates who were suspected to have engaged in examination irregularities have been withheld pending the completion of investigations into their cases," Machogu announced.

During the year 2023 KCSE Examination, eleven (11) counties had a significant entry of more male than female candidates.

These were: Garissa (66.39%:33.61%), Mandera (65.44%:34.56%), Wajir (61.69%: 38.31%), Turkana (61.00%: 39.00%), Samburu (56.58%: 43.42%), Narok (54.19%: 45.81%), Homabay (53.29%: 46.71%), West Pokot (52.47%: 47.53%), Mombasa (52.05%: 47.95%), Migori (52.01%: 47.99%) and Lamu (51.67%: 48.33%).
