“How can I thank the government for lowering the fuel yet they disowned the rising prices and blamed it on global factors?"

Githunguri member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba now says she will not commend the Kenya Kwanza government for lowering the fuel prices.

In a statement via X on Wednesday January 17, Wamuchomba said the government blamed global factors for the rising furl prices and therefore she will thank the global factors for the price cuts.

“How can I thank the government for lowering the fuel yet they disowned the rising prices and blamed on global factors ? Let me thank global factors,” said Wamuchomba.

On January 14, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) reduced the prices of Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene by Sh 5.00, Sh5.00 and Sh 4.82 per litre respectively.

Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene now retails at Sh 207.36, Sh196.47 Sh194.23 respectively in Nairobi.

The new fuel prices are inclusive of the 16% Value Added Tax (VAT) as outlined by the Finance Act 2023, the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2020, and the revised rates for exercise duty adjusted for inflation.

According to EPRA, the average landing cost of imported Petrol decreased by 2.40% from $694.44 per cubic metre in November 2023 to $677.78 per cubic metre in December 2023.

Diesel decreased by 9.06% from $826.01 per cubic metre to $751.15 per cubic metre while Kerosene decreased by 4.33% from $759.93 per cubic metre to $727.00 per cubic metre.

“EPRA wishes to assure the public of its continued commitment to the observance of fair competition and protection of the interests of both consumers and investors in the energy and petroleum sectors,” the regulatory agency stated.
