The Azimio leader's charitable act was for the welfare of the victims in Embakasi.

Azimio La Umoja leader Raila Odinga has extended a charitable act to the victims of a fire in Embakasi that claimed lives and led to injuries.

According to Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Raila donated Sh 1 million toward the welfare of the victims.

The lawmaker further offered to top the amount with another Sh 1 million totalling the donation to Sh 2 million.

"Today morning H.E Baba Raila Amolo Odinga sent me Sh 1 million Kenya Shillings to help the fire victims. In addition, I have donated an extra Sh 1 million shillings towards this noble cause totalling Sh 2 million," said Babu.

Babu further revealed that other leaders from the opposition faction were committed to the charitable cause.

"Other Azimio Leaders are also contributing towards this. God bless Kenya and please Pray for Embakasi East," he said.

The gas explosion led to a fire that claimed lives and caused injuries.

Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has explained what caused the Embakasi gas explosion that initially left two people dead and 222 others nursing serious injuries.

In a detailed statement, the Government Spokesperson noted that the fire started around 1:30 pm after a huge explosion was heard in the Mradi area, in Embakasi.

Mwaura revealed that one lorry loaded with gas exploded, igniting a huge fire that spread quickly in the adjacent areas.

"One Lorry of an unknown registration number that was loaded with gas exploded, igniting a huge ball of fire that spread widely," Mwaura explained.

The death toll rose to three with those sustaining severe burns rising to over 270.

The county government of Nairobi took it upon itself to waive the medical charges for the victims.
