A police officer has been reported missing after being swept away by flooding water in Nairobi Central Business District.

The incident reportedly happened on Sunday night when the officer attached at the Kamukunji Police Station was rescuing pedestrians in the city who were stranded due to heavy downpour.

According to preliminary reports, the officer successfully rescued four people from their business stalls.

The four who included three women and one child were stuck between a slab connecting their stalls and the pedestrian walkway.

While heading back to help them lock their stalls, the slab caved in and the officer was swept away by the raging water.

The incident was confirmed by Nairobi Police boss Adamson Bungei who stated that a team had been deployed to track the missing officer and recover the firearm.

“We searched for him in vain. We are going back to the place for further searches,” said Bungei.

In another incident, the body of a resident was found swept by the flooding water in the Makumi area within Waruku. This was confirmed to Nairobileo.co.ke by Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai. Three more incidents were reported within Nairobi.

The heavy rains rendered most parts of the city impassable. The elevated highway, Nairobi Expressway, was also hit as the road was heavily flooded leaving motorists stranded.

Many other people were displaced following the downpour.

"With rains pounding various parts of Nairobi County, it is crucial to know how to protect yourself and your loved ones from potential flooding hazards," the Kenya Red Cross warned.
