Virginia Mbinya Maingi on Monday, April 15 gave birth to a baby girl at the Kithimani Law Court in Machakos County moments after she was acquitted of the murder of her son.

In a statement on Tuesday, April 16, the Judiciary said it was a blessing for a baby to be born on the court premises.

The judiciary hoped the baby who has been named Justice Mwikali would grow up healthy with a bright future and hopefully become a judge. 

“Normally the Judiciary delivers justice but yesterday we were blessed to have baby Justice Mwikali delivered at Kithimani Law Courts premises. The mum had come to seek judicial services. We pray that God will give her good health and a bright future, hopefully as a judge,” the Judiciary stated.

Virginia was arrested on March 25 after the suspicious death of her son and was arraigned in court on March 27 over murder charges.

The court ordered Virginia, who was heavily pregnant, to be detained at Matuu Police Station while detectives completed investigations into her son's death.

On Monday, she was arraigned in court where Principal Magistrate Paul Matanda acquitted her of the murder case after investigations revealed that her son succumbed due to starvation.

Moments after the acquittal, Virginia went into labour at the Kithimani court premises, forcing judicial officers to call for nurses from a nearby dispensary to deliver the baby.

She was later escorted by a Matuu police station vehicle to her rural home.
