The former National Museums boss is facing charges of embezzling Sh 491 million.

Former National Museums of Kenya Director-General Mzalendo Nyaga Kibunja was on Tuesday, April 16 charged at the Milimani Law Courts alongside seven others over embezzlement of Sh 491 million.

Kibunja and the co-accused allegedly hatched a fraudulent scheme to make payment of salaries to ghost workers at the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) over 5 years.

The suspects were charged with conspiracy to commit an offense of corruption, abuse of office, money laundering, acquisition of proceeds of crime, and financial misconduct.

They denied all the charges and were released on a Sh 5 million cash bail or an alternative bond of Sh 10 million.

“Each accused person may be released on a cash bail of Sh 5 million or bond of Sh 10 million,” Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Victor Wakhumile ordered.

Wakhumile also ordered the suspects to deposit their travel documents in court and not to make an attempt to contact witnesses.

Kibunja was arrested by Ethics and Anti-Corruption (EACC) detectives on Monday together with Olivier Rabuor, Wycliffe Odhiambo, and Oscar Mwaura.

The four were detained at the EACC Integrity Centre Police Station before being arraigned in court on Tuesday morning.

“EACC has, today, arrested former Director General of the National Museums of Kenya Dr. Mzalendo Kibunja and 3 other suspects to be charged with embezzlement of Kes.490 million at the National Museums of Kenya (NMK),” EACC said in a statement on Monday evening.

The case will be mentioned on June 2, 2024.
