President William Ruto has announced plans to review the building codes in the country.

Speaking during the launch of Connected Africa Summit 2024 at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, Ruto pointed out that his administration has kickstarted the review process that will inform key construction decisions.

According to the Head of State, part of the review will require all new buildings to be fibre-ready. 

This according to President Ruto will help deepen connectivity in the country and contribute to broader responsibility in the construction sector.

"We have commenced the process of reviewing our building codes to ensure all new buildings are fibre optic ready," Ruto announced.

Speaking on Monday, April 22, Ruto added that through the new codes, Kenya will be able to implement the National Citizen Digital Skills Programme to bolster ICT inclusion in more parts of the country.

Schools, education facilities, hospitals and business premises will majorly be targeted through the new building code.

The network is purposed to provide affordable and quality broadband infrastructure, promote and facilitate open access to underserved areas for delivery of education public safety, and healthcare through enhanced Broadband Connectivity purposes to reduce costs for the private sector to provide rural broadband coverage.

However, President Ruto did not reveal when the new codes will be implemented in the country.

The plan to put up fibre optics over the country was scaled up by former President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration.

Cables were laid in the Indian Ocean as part of the plan to increase broadband network in the country.
