The two officers were arraigned in court on Monday.

The National Police Service (NPS) has suspended two police officers linked to 2,658 pieces of ammunition that were recovered in Laikipia County last week.

In a statement on Monday, April 22, NPS said the two officers Chief Inspector Joel Warui Githaiga and Police Constable Martin Murimi who are attached to the Anti-Stock Theft Unit Sondu Camp have been arrested.

The service noted that the two were arraigned in court on Monday and the state was allowed to hold the suspects in custody for four days.

“Two more suspects namely No. 235135 Chief Inspector Joel Warui Githaiga and No. 114573 Police Constable Martin Murimi from Anti-Stock Theft Unit Sondu Camp have also been arrested for sale of ammunitions to criminals. The Officers were arraigned before Court today April 22, 2024, in a Miscellaneous Application seeking custody of the accused persons for a period of 4 days which was granted. All the four suspects will now appear before Kibera Law Court on Friday April 26, 2024, while the Officers remain suspended from the National Police Service with immediate effect,” read the statement in part.

NPS cautioned members of the public from engaging in the unauthorized purchase, possession, manufacture, and sale of firearms and ammunition and instead report any such criminal activities to the nearest police station.

On Thursday last week, law enforcement officers ambushed Josphat Maina Karanja and Teresiah Wairimu and ransacked their home where they found 2,500 pieces of ammunition stashed in small packets.

"Police in Laikipia yesterday April 17, 2024 nabbed 2, 658 rounds of ammunitions from the home of one Josphat Maina Karanja within Minjore area, Kirima Sub-County," NPS stated.

"The owner Josphat Karanja was also arrested together with his wife Teresiah Wairimu, during the raid," it added.
