The lorry loaded with sand and people overturned after it was overpowered by the raging floodwaters.

The number of people killed in the River Kwa Muswii drowning incident has risen to nine.

The victims were onboard a truck loaded with sand which was swept away by floods while trying to cross the swollen river in Sultan Hamud, Makueni County, on Friday, April 26.

Owing to the heavy rains, the Muswii River, which originates in Kajiado County, burst its banks, paralysing traffic along Kasikeu-Sultan Hamud.

A video seen by Nairobileo.co.ke shows the truck carrying more than ten people trying to cross the flooded river but being swept away by the raging waters.

Residents gathered near the river could be seen trying to rescue some of the victims swept away by the floods.

The Kenya Red Cross said in a statement that its staff were on the scene and responding to the situation.
