Lady Justice Martha Koome has been sworn in as Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya.

Lady Justice Martha Karambu Koome has today, May 21, 2021, been sworn in as the Chief Justice of Kenya and President of the Supreme Court.

She becomes the country's first female chief justice, in a ceremony presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House Nairobi.

Koome was appointed by President Kenyatta as CJ in gazette notice number 4075 published on May 19 in exercise of powers of Article 166, (I) (a) of the Constitution of Kenya.

She was appointed Judge of Supreme Court in a gazette notice dated May 13, 2021.

Koome took her oath of office at State House, following successful vetting by parliament.

President Kenyatta urged the CJ to exercise her powers in line with provisions of the Constitution while maintaining the fairness, and sovereignty of the Judiciary and the Supreme Court
