A rescue operation is underway at the scene. 

At least 10 people are feared dead after a truck was swept away by floods while trying to cross the Muswii River in Sultan Hamud, Makueni County.

The Muswii river which originates in Kajiado County, burst its banks, paralysing traffic along Kasikeu-Sultan Hamud.

A video seen by Nairobileo.co.ke shows the truck carrying more than ten people trying to cross the flooded river but being swept away by the raging waters.

Residents gathered near the river could be seen trying to rescue some of the victims swept away by the floods.

The Kenya Red Cross said in a statement that its staff were on the scene and responding to the situation.

“In Sultan Hamud, Makueni County, a distressing incident has occurred: a lorry ferrying people was swept away by raging waters. We are at the scene and actively responding to the situation,” Kenya Red Cross stated.

The country is currently experiencing heavy rains that have caused severe flooding in various parts of the country.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced on Thursday that the government has set up a National Flood Emergency Multi-Agency Team and a response centre to deal with the flooding situation in various parts of the country as a result of the incessant rains.

The DP noted that the response center will be based at Nyayo House, under the Ministry of Interior, to monitor the flooding situation across the country and initiate immediate interventions to save lives and property from destruction.
