Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has called for unity between Kisii and Nyamira Counties.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has moved to restore unity in Kisii and Nyamira Counties following the political tension experienced in the region recently.

The CS' appeal for unity comes after the May 18 by-elections in Bonchari that left leaders and members of the public divided.

Matiang'i was at the end of criticism from local leaders and residents for allegedly deploying police officers to intimidate ODM and UDA candidates in the mini-polls.

The criticism was, however, ill received by their counterparts from Nyamira County who warned the Kisii County leaders and residents for allegedly disrespecting the CS. This has sparked political animosity between the two counties.

While speaking at Ekerubo SDA church yesterday, May 29, 2021, Matiang'i stated that divisions in between the counties will only slow down development in the two counties.

The CS stated that he has enjoyed a positive working relationship with Kisii Governor James Ongwae, Senator Sam Ongeri and Woman Representative Janet Ongera.

This is despite being accused of deploying police officers to raid the house of Governor Ongwae, where he had hosted ODM leaders ahead of the May 18, Bonchari mini polls.

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, Senator Okong'o O'Mogeni ans Woman Representative Jerusha Momanyi, who had attended the church service echoed Matiang'i's sentiments in the call for unity.

"Leaders in Kisii and Nyamira should not be divided. We shall rally behind the cabinet secretary," Nyaribo stated.

"Never should we allow this light to go off. It must keep burning," Mrs. Momanyi stated, referring to Matiang'i as the light of the region.

Recently a host of legislators from Nyamira County have defended the CS, alleging that the 2020 general elections and succession politics have prompted unwarranted attacks towards the CS.

The call for peace between Kisii and Nyamira counties comes at the back of a push for Matiang'i's impeachment, with legislators in the country accusing him of abusing his power and role as Interior CS.
