Two people have lost their lives after a vehicle they were travelling in was sprayed with bullets at Kathome area along the Nairobi-Machakos road.

Confirming the incident, Machakos County Commissioner John Ondego said the attacked vehicle; a Hondo Fit had three occupants at the time of the incident. Two occupants succumbed to bullet wounds while one escaped unhurt.

According to the County Commissioner, it is highly likely that the attackers had planned the entire attack and trailed the victims from Kyumbi area, before blocking and firing several rounds at the crime scene.

"One of them is our officer based in Mwala and it seems they were being followed…We really don't know the reason behind the attack.

"The driver and the core driver succumbed on the spot to 18 gunshot wounds while the survivor escaped unhurt," he added.

Police have commenced investigations to establish the attackers and their motive. So far, no one has been arrested over the shooting.

Meanwhile, bodies of the deceased have been taken to Machakos Level 5 Hospital mortuary.

The shooting incident comes barely a week after a gang attacked an Equity Bank branch in Matuu and made away with an unknown amount of money.

The gang that was reportedly commandeered by an ex-GSU officer is yet to be nabbed. So far, three suspects have been arrested over the robbery.
