IPOA Recommends Murder Charges on 6 Police Officers Involved in Death of Embu Brothers

The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has recommended murder charges against six police officers involved in the death of two Embu brothers Emmanuel Mutura and Benson Njiru.

In a statement, IPOA chairperson Anne Makori said the authority has made three recommendations to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), among them facing murder charges and suspension from service.

"That the officers be relieved of their duties immediately pending the outcome of an independent review of the findings that will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions. As it stands now, the six officers face a capital offence – murder. This recommendation is not likely to take a different direction," said Ms Makori.

IPOA further recommended that the officers surrender any government property in their possession, including firearms within the shortest time possible.

"That the officers and their commanders, who have since been interrogated and their statements recorded, be available round the clock for further assistance to IPOA investigators when called upon," said the statement in part.

The authority vowed to be fair, impartial, and independent in its investigations.

The two brothers; Benson Njiru and Emmanuel Mutura died over two weeks ago after they were allegedly arrested by police.

Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai on Monday issued an update on the investigations, stating that all officers from the affected station have been suspended to create room for investigation.

"Good morning, first, my sincere condolences to the Kianjokama family. IPOA has concluded investigations on the matter and forwarded the file to the DPP for action. Meanwhile, all the officers have been suspended with immediate effect to pave way for prosecution," Mutyambai said.
