Gikomba Market traders are counting losses after fire razed down a section of the market in the wee hours of Wednesday, October 20, 2021.

Reports indicate that the fire started at the Southern part of the market near Muthurwa Primary School in Pumwani.

Property of unknown value has been destroyed by the inferno.

Fire fighters from various units including the KDF made their way to the market and helped put off the fire.

News of the fire incident was broken by Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan who expressed disappointment at the increased cases of infernos at the open-air market.

“Saddened that the section of the market has been gutted by yet another fire and traders are face incalculable losses,” the MP tweeted.

Cases of fires in Gikomba market are almost a seasonal occurrence with the market burning at least 11 times since 2010.

In August 2021, a different section of the market was razed down, with the government promising to enhance security and surveillance at the market.

While the cause of the regular fires is yet to be fully established, it is alleged that they may be due to business rivalry.
