Laikipia Woman Representative Cate Waruguru is under a police probe after she was accused of assault.

The lawmaker is accused of allegedly assaulting a woman during Deputy President William Ruto's tour of Laikipia County on December 7, 2021.

Kirima Sub County Police Commander Donald Sailor told Nation that a 28-year old resident of Sipili in Laikipia West had filed a report at Sipili Police Station accusing the Woman Rep of physically assaulting her.

Sailor stated that the case will be thoroughly investigated to determine whether the accusations are legit after which charges will be preferred against Waruguru.

“The lady made a complaint with the police on Thursday claiming to have been arrested by the MP.

“Investigations will be launched with a view of establishing what really transpired," the police boss said.

Waruguru has been summoned by police to present herself at Sipili Police Station and record a statement of the alleged incident.

The complainant, since identified as Lucy Wairimu accused the woman representative of verbally and physically assaulting her after she was heckled by residents of Sipili during the DP's tour of the region.

During the same meeting, youth allied to former Mungiki sect leader Maina Njenga also heckled at DP Ruto during his address.

Angered by the incident, the DP told off the youth, stating that they should take their meeting elsewhere.

Waruguru recently decamped to DP Ruto's camp and is seeking to contest the Laikipia East parliamentary seat in the August 9, 2022, general elections on a UDA Party ticket.

She has since drummed up support for the second in command to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
