Reports indicate that the teacher is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital after he was rescued by colleagues.

A primary school teacher from Webuye East Constituency in Bungoma County set himself on fire after receiving a dismissal letter from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Thursday, December 16, 2021.

The teacher is said to have been dismissed over an alleged indiscipline case.

Reports indicate that the teacher is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital after he was rescued by colleagues.

While confirming the incident, Webuye East Assistant Commissioner, Peter Yego, revealed that the teacher also attempted to take the lives of his colleagues.

"The teacher arrived in school around 7:40 am and gained entry through the backdoor.

"He started conversion with a fellow teacher and informed him that he wanted to see the headteacher. Shortly after, he locked the door to the headteacher and deputy's offices and barricaded himself on the verandah leading to the staffroom," the school watchman said.

According to reports, the teacher poured petrol through a small opening on the door leading into the headteacher and deputy's offices and set them on fire.

The teachers targeted in the incident saw the fire and scampered for safety, escaping through the windows.

Upon recovery, the teacher will be arraigned in court.

Yego noted that the teacher will face charges ranging from defilement, attempted murder, suicide, and destruction of public property.
