Phyllis Ngirita, one of the main suspects in the National Youth Service (NYS) II scandal has been sentenced to two days at the Lang'ata Women Prison for jumping bail.

Appearing in court on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, Ngirita was warned of dire consequences if she continued to violate her bond terms and court orders.

She appeared in court after a warrant of arrest was issued against her. She had failed to appear in court to stand trial in a criminal case against her.

Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi noted that Ngirita had formed a habit of skipping court without substantial reasons.

“I noted the accused person has been giving conflicting reasons as to why she has been skipping trial. l find she is not honest and l send her to prison for two days,” he ruled.

She told the court that she had forgotten that the case against her was slatted for hearing on Monday.

According to reports, authorities have been searching for Ngirita since last year when she skipped a hearing.

Prosecutor James Gachoka told the court that she had gone underground on Monday, prompting the issuance of an arrest warrant.

The court warned her that she risks having her Ksh1 million bond cancelled. 

Ngirita was charged in 2019 on several counts of tax evasion for Ksh7 million and Ksh13 million.
