Two people have been reported dead after the walls of a mine shaft at Kakula gold mine in Mikeyi Central sub-location, Nyatike sub-county, Migori County collapsed on the evening of Tuesday, February 8, 2022.

Confirming the incident, area chief David Oula stated that the two died on the spot while several others were injured and rushed to Migori Level Four hospital where they are undergoing treatment.

The two deceased miners have since been identified as Shadrack Otieno, 27, and Peter Chacha, 35.


According to Chief Oula, a total of 11 miners were inside the mine when the shaft collapsed. Seven of the miners who were prospecting gold escaped without any injuries.

“The miners who were eleven in number were inside the mine prospecting gold when the wall of the mine collapsed. When it collapsed, it killed two people on the spot and injured two people,” he said.

Chief Oula stated that investigations have been launched to determine what may have caused the shaft to collapse.

The bodies of the two deceased miners have been moved to Migori Level Four hospital mortuary.

The area chief appealed to miners to be cautious when prospecting gold to avert such cases of fatal accidents at the mines.

The death of the two miners comes a time when the country has recorded numerous incidents involving gold mines.
