ANC party further discouraged divisive narratives ahead of the August 9 polls, terming the remarks by Gachagua as premature and unwarranted.

Amani National Congress (ANC) has dismissed Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua's remarks that Deputy President William Ruto is Kenya Kwanza Alliance's presidential candidate.

Appearing on Citizen TV on Monday morning, February 28, the MP stated that the coalition had settled on the DP to be the flag bearer in the forthcoming elections.

The remarks has since caught the attention of the Musalia Mudavadi's-led party sparking a response.

In a statement, ANC Secretary-General Simon Gikuru blasted Gachagua urging him to embrace the broader picture of the coalition's philosophy.

"Kenya Kwanza has not decided on its presidential candidate and running mate candidates. This will happen and be unveiled at an appropriate time by our principals," the statement read in part.

The party further discouraged divisive narratives ahead of the August 9 polls, terming the remarks by Gachagua as premature and unwarranted.

"In this regard, Hon Gachagua has no authority to speak for Kenya Kwanza on the matter hence his sentiments are premature, untimely, and unwarranted," the statement added.

Speaking during the same interview, Gachagua also claimed that the frosty relationship between President Uhuru Kenyatta began after the 2017 elections.

The MP said Uhuru used the DP to retain the presidency for a second term and thereafter turned on him.

“He waited until Ruto helped him ascend to the presidency. Once in power, he fought him very hard,” the MP said.
