Uhuru said this will take place effective today May 1, 2022

Workers can now breathe a sigh of relief after President Uhuru Kenyatta announced an increase in the minimum wage by 12%.

Speaking on Sunday, May 1, during Labour Day celebrations at Nyayo stadium, the head of state said the government had taken the decision to cushion Kenyan workers against the high cost of living that has ravaged the country's economy.

Uhuru said this will take place effective today May 1, 2022.

This was after the union officials, through the COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli urged him to consider the interest of workers.

"As a caring government, we find there is a compelling case to review the minimum wages so as to cushion our workers against further erosions, and in that effect, I today declare an increase of the minimum wage by 12% with effect from May 1, 2022" stated Uhuru amid cheers from the workers.

The head of state also said that the country had not reviewed the minimum wage for the last three years and that this will go a long way in cushioning the Kenyan workers.  The last salary review happened in 2019

Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) was pushing for a 40 percent increment in the minimum wage.
