A man with Kenyan roots is set to become UK's next Prime Minister after the resignation of Liz Truss.

Rishi Sunak, a man with Kenyan roots, is set to become the United Kingdom's (UK) Prime Minister after the resignation of Liz Truss.

The development comes after Sunak was, on Monday, October 24, elected leader of the Conservatives Party, one of the main political parties in the UK.

His election came after his competitor, Penny Mordaunt, withdrew from the race, maintaining that she backed the Richmond MP fully.

"As a result, we have now chosen our next Prime Minister. The decision is a historic one and shows, once again, the diversity and talent of our party. Rishi has my full support," Mordaunt said in a statement.

Sunak will become the first British Asian to be the UK's Prime Minister. He was elected MP for Richmond on a Conservative ticket in 2015.

Former UK PM Liz Truss.

The 42-year-old's father, Yashvir Sunak, was born in Kenya.

Following Sunak's election as the Conservatives leader, former UK PM Truss congratulated the Richmond MP, adding that he had her full support.

"Congratulations Rishi Sunak on being appointed as Leader of the Conservative Party and our next Prime Minister. You have my full support," Truss stated.

Truss stepped down from the position in less than a two-month tenure after being appointed Prime Minister on 6 September 2022.

After Sunak's appointment, his case will be similar to that of former US president Barrack Obama whose father had Kenyan roots.
