The fire is suspected to have been caused by a cooking gas cylinder 

A mother and her 7-year-old son have died in a fire tragedy that occurred in Mukuru Slums in Nairobi.

The 40-year-old Phires Mokeira and her boy lost their lives over the weekend in the fire incident that left five families homeless.

The fire is suspected to have been caused by a cooking gas cylinder erupted in the Vietnam area of the Mukuru Slums.

The mother and the son were in the house when the tragedy happened.

Residents had a difficult time struggling to contain the fire.  During the process of containing the fire, they stumbled on the bodies of the two burnt beyond recognition.

The bodies of the two were removed and taken to the morgue. Police say investigations are underway to get to the root cause of the fire.

Fire tragedies in the slum areas have proved difficult to contain.

The iron sheet structures that describe the slum dwellers' houses are said to be a major contributor to the fire spreading faster when it occurs in a particular house.

The lack of roads in the informal; settlement areas has also been faulted for blocking rescue attempts when tragedy occurs.
