  • Driver kills two as he attempts to race an ambulance that was ferrying a patient to the hospital.

Police are hunting for a driver who caused an accident that killed two passengers in Makueni County.

The driver was reportedly drunk and was seen driving dangerously in Wote town before he hit a passer-by near Makueni Referral Hospital road and crashed into a residential building.

Officers retrieved beer bottles from the damaged car and towed it to Makueni Police Station awaiting investigations.

A woman in the car died on the spot while a male passenger passed on while receiving treatment at the Makueni Referral Hospital.

Witness Accounts

Witnesses said the ambulance was headed in the same direction as the car and the driver of the vehicle tried to overtake it.

The ambulance slowed down to allow the vehicle to pass but when tried to overtake it deviated from the road, smashed a wall, and plunged into a building compound.

According to witnesses the driver got out of the car and said a short prayer before escaping the crime scene.

The Makueni Referral Hospital medical superintendent Dr Joseph Masila said they had received three victims following the accident.

“We received three victims of a road traffic accident where one had already died, the second one died while getting resuscitated at the casualty unit. The third one is stable in our unit,” said Dr Masila.
