Police in Eldoret have killed three members of a gang that has been a threat to businesses in the municipality.

Speaking to the media, police revealed that the three were gunned down after the gang of five was involved in a shootout with the officers.

The officers stated that the incident happened at around 7:30 pm on the night of April 11, when the thugs had planned to rob a supermarket at the Eldoret CBD.

"We have killed three thugs who have been terrorising residents here in Eldoret Town. Tonight, they had come prepared to rob a supermarket because they are used to do that in the evening.

"We got them and recovered the firearm they were using. It had 23 bullets," one of the officers stated.

Police noted that the gang had been on their radar for a while after residents reported a string of robberies targeting businesses in the region.

"We had been looking for them because even yesterday they robbed a supermarket at Munyaka. The previous day, they took Ksh10,000 from another supermarket. Two escaped during the shooting that killed three of them," he added.

A report by the police indicated that they asked the robbers to surrender but they chose to open fire.

Police gunned down three of the thugs, two managed to escape.

The bodies of the three were taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary to pave way for further investigations.
